Berlin Cosmopolitan School update Berlin Cosmopolitan School cafeteria in cooperaton with Julia Kaschlinski, 2025
working on heritage-protected buildings
Refreshing the underground
When the school was founded in 2008, the BCS cafeteria was set up with simple means in the basement of the building. After 17 years, it needs to be reorganised in order to offer the now 500 students a high quality of stay with different atmospheres.
The centre of the room is occupied by an installation of plant shelves and light, which structures the space, absorbs sound and filters the air: a GREEN LUNG.
The basement is reinterpreted as a living space and is thematically linked to the adjacent schoolyard.
Existing equipment is used, reworked, marked and converted into mobile elements so that different uses can be flexibly represented. New lighting and light control support the differentiation of the atmospheric quality.
